GROWING up, Betty Banks was the “black sheep” of her community because she did not fit the mould.

The My Kitchen Rules star has quickly become a fan favourite for her cool look and punchy comments, but the Western Sydney local wasn’t always so accepted.

“I shocked a lot of parents; they would say ‘don’t hang out with her, she has tattoos’,” Banks said.

“It was a big deal for me when I was a teenager.

“I was the black sheep. (They said) ‘She is not good’.”

For many in the Asian community she did not conform to their standards.

“Because I came from an Asian family a lot of us kids would grow up to become lawyers and doctors without any tattoos. For a lot of people in the community it is about making sure you are prim and proper and perfect,” she said.

“Having such a creative streak, I feel there is more to it for us than being doctors and lawyers.”

With her newly found fame, things have finally begun to change.

“I am making them proud. I am representing the community,” she said.

Banks has even found love since her time on the small screen.

“There is a mystery man,” she said.

“It is early days, but I will keep you updated. He loves watching the show.”
