IT may be 60 years old but the latest performance of My Fair Lady has now sold more tickets than any other production in the history of the Sydney Opera House.
Trade, Tourism and Major Events Minister Stuart Ayres said 19,000 overnight visitors are expected to travel to Sydney to watch the 60th anniversary production of the beloved 1956 Broadway musical — directed now by its original star Julie Andrews, and produced by Opera Australia and John Frost.
Mr Ayres said that would inject an estimated $7 million in visitor expenditure into the state’s economy. “The success of My Fair Lady just proves once again there is no better place in the world to launch a new stage show than Sydney,” he said.
My Fair Lady starring Mark Vincent and Anna O’Byrne opened on August 28 and is scheduled to run until November 5.
The previous Opera House ticket record holder was the 2014 production of The King & I.
