GREY skies and drizzle met the heartbroken tears of Selina Cheng who, almost a year to the day since his death, remembered her murdered husband Curtis at the National Police Remembrance Day service.

Mrs Cheng was comforted by her children Alpha and Zilvia on Thursday as Mr Cheng became the first non-uniformed police member to be added to the NSW Police Wall of Remembrance.

Mr Cheng, an accountant, was shot dead in a kerbside attack at Parramatta on October 2. His murderer, Farhad Jabar, 15, was shot dead by special constables.

Mr Cheng’s name was etched alongside Port Stephens Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson, 43, who was killed after his car hit a tree in the Hunter Valley near Maitland on March 5 as he tried to get ahead of a pursuit to lay road spikes.

Mr Cheng has also been remembered on the roll of honour on the national police memorial in Canberra.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said yesterday that while names on the wall were normally in honour of enlisted officers, it was fitting Mr Cheng was recognised.

“He died a terrible death,” Mr Scipione said.

“To see and to witness what was captured on the videotape that afternoon, to see how brutal that murder was, is something I will never forget and I don’t think Australia will ever forget.”

More than 250 NSW Police officers have died in the line of duty.
