RESIDENTS heard screams for help early yesterday as a man lay dying in a south-western Sydney street less than 50m from a hospital.
An off-duty doctor stumbled across the man, who had been shot and stabbed, on his way to his car on Claribel St, near Bankstown Hospital, at 12.15am.
He tried to help 29-year-old Youssef Assoum, who had been shot once in the right thigh and stabbed several times in the head.
The man was rushed to Liverpool Hospital, because of the serious nature of his injuries, but later died.
Police sources believe the man — who is understood to have been known to police — may have been dumped at the hospital by friends or associates unwilling to identify themselves.
A shirtless 30-year-old man, who one witness said appeared to be a friend of the victim, was arrested at the scene. Police would not confirm if the man was involved in the attack.
The Homicide Squad and Bankstown Police were last night trying to establish exactly where the man had been shot.
One woman who lives nearby said she heard a man yelling for help.
“They were swearing and running up and down (the street). I got up when I heard ‘help’,” she said.
“There was somebody running with a torch asking ‘what’s up mate?’ We heard some shouting, it sounded like someone was drunk.”
Another resident Venero said he heard people arguing on the street.
“I heard yelling yesterday afternoon and I heard it again last night. I heard like a melee going on for 30 seconds,” he said yesterday.
“I didn’t hear any pleas for help, just people scuffling or fighting. I wasn’t expecting a murder to happen right there on my front doorstep.”
One resident said the man arrested at the scene appeared to be the victim’s “mate”.
Detective Inspector Glen Fitzgerald said the doctor raised the alarm when he came across the bloody scene.
“He immediately sought assistance from security and other medical staff and paramedics to come and assist,” he said.
Specialist ballistics dogs and forensic officers examined the area, focusing on a green fence near the intersection of Claribel and Artegall streets.
A Toyota Yaris found near to where the man was discovered was seized by police.
