Police say John Edwards, 68, shot the two teenagers and also suffered a gun shot wound inside a home at Normanhurst.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said police were doing all they could to comfort Ms Edwards.

“An extensive range of support services was being provided to the family which is having to go through this horrific experience of losing two children at the hand of another,” he said.

“What we do know from the information available to us is this was a planned activity on the part of 68 year old male and we are of the belief that shortly thereafter he has attended the address at Normanhurst and taken his own life.”

Two hand guns have been recovered from the scene at Normanhurst.

Police said there were no current AVOs in place and the father did not live at the West Pennant Hills home and he had been living at the Normanhurst home where he was found dead.

Investigating officers say the family had been involved in a custody dispute that was in the courts over the past two years and the man and woman had been in a long-term relationship.
