A MAJOR upgrade will transform The Rocks into a “bucket list” destination for tourists and Sydneysiders under a multimillion-dollar development plan approved by the state government.
A $15 million project at the Campbell’s Cove promenade seeks to balance preservation of the area’s heritage and improvements to the public space for visitors in a bid to draw more tourists and locals to the precinct.
The upgrade is a part of a wider plan to revive the area, including a privately funded overhaul of the historic Campbell’s Stores, with the owner of the historic warehouse courting high-end restaurants.
The Rocks precinct attracts 14 million visitors a year, injecting $400 million into the NSW economy, Finance Minister Victor Dominello said.
The new upgrades will level and widen the promenade, add a waterfront amphitheatre, a waterfront “leisure area”, and add connections to precincts including the new overseas passenger terminal wharf extension.
“This upgrade will be a boon for Sydney and will enhance the visitor experience for locals and tourists,” Mr Dominello said.
“We are ensuring The Rocks is added to every tourist’s bucket list.”

The Daily Telegraph revealed last month that Property NSW was driving opal and ugg boot shops out of the area — particularly on the entry to the precinct — because research had shown that Sydney residents didn’t like the extent of “tourism retailing”.
Work will start in April and be completed before the end of the year.
The Campbell’s Stores upgrade is being privately funded at a cost of $32 million and will add new restaurants, cafes and bars.
