AN iconic mid north coast road stop along the Pacific Highway has gone up in flames.
The Ayres Rock Roadhouse at North Arm Cove, 40kms north of Port Stephens, burst into flames around 7.15pm on Tuesday night.
All the employees inside escaped uninjured but the property was destroyed.
Nearly 20 fire crews from Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Services were on hand to contain the fire, one they described as a major, “fully involved” fire.
More than 50 firefighters battled the flames and aimed to protect fuel storage facilities on site.
The Uluru replica turned local convenience store was completely destroyed.
There have been no reported injuries.
The Uluru replica was first opened in November 1990 by Australian film makers and TV personalities the Leyland Brothers as part of their theme park ‘Leyland Brothers World’.
The Ayres Rock is 1/40th the size of Australia’s iconic landmark.
Since the sale and rebranding of Leyland Brothers World, the replica reopened as a gas station at Karuha.
Police have established a crime scene at the service station and officers have launched investigations.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
