More than 180 firies battling ‘major’ blaze at industrial fire in NSW Hunter Region

More than 180 firies have been deployed to fight a major industrial blaze that broke out in the NSW Hunter Region but emergency services say the fire is expected to continue overnight.

More than 180 firies are fighting a large industrial fire - described as a “major incident” by firies - in the NSW Hunter region which is expected to continue burning overnight.

The fire broke out at an industrial complex on Mitchell Avenue in Kurri Kurri about 10.40am on Sunday.

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said numerous wooden crates were alight and flames were threatening neighbouring structures when officers arrived.

“Highly volatile acetylene gas bottles and pallets of flammable hand sanitiser (ethanol) are contained within the site,” the spokesman said.

More than 180 firefighters have been deployed to fight the blaze, which is expected to burn overnight.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said the building was believed to be unoccupied at the time.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Officers from Hunter Valley Police District are on scene assisting with traffic management with local traffic diversions in place.

Residents and members of the public who suffer from respiratory problems are advised to take caution and avoid the area.

Delays are expected and motorists are urged to avoid local routes.
