THE infant daughter of Islamic State terrorist Mohamed Elomar may become an Australian citizen after it was revealed yesterday that papers had been lodged to apply for her nationalisation.
The 14-year-old daughter of Islamic State butcher Khaled Sharrouf, Zaynab, gave birth to three-month-old Ayesha after she “married” Elomar in Syria in March last year.
As the child was born in Syria, she does not automatically become an Australian citizen, despite Zaynab holding an Australian passport.
It is understood the paperwork required for Ayesha to become an Australian citizen has been lodged, in the event the child returns to Australia with her mother.
Zaynab and her daughter, along with Sharrouf’s four other children — Hoda, 13, Abdullah, 11, Zarqawi, 10, and Humzeh, 5 — were orphaned after the death of their mother Tara Nettleton in September.
Sharrouf is believed to have been killed a few months earlier in a drone attack.
The children’s grandmother, Karen Nettleton, flew to Abu Dhabi en route to Turkey last week in a bid to track the children down in Syria and bring them home.
Attempts to contact Ms Nettleton in Turkey have been unsuccessful. It is understood she is maintaining her silence until the children, believed to be in the IS stronghold of Raqqa, are located.
Ms Nettleton has limited knowledge as to their exact whereabouts.
