Mohamad Hussein accuses Anthony Albanese of ‘supporting genocide’

The Labor Party is unlikely to take action against a Western Sydney councillor who described the Prime Minister as “a person who supports genocide”.

A Western Sydney councillor has described Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as “a person who supports genocide”, in response to an invitation to an event Mr Albanese is scheduled to speak at.

Cumberland City councillor Mohamad Hussein also called for a protest at NSW Parliament after Chris Minns sacked an MP for criticising policing of pro-Palestine rallies, in correspondence seen by The Daily Telegraph.

This includes his response to an invitation to the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue’s Prime Minister’s luncheon on Friday, where Mr Albanese will speak.

In response to the invitation, which was extended to Cumberland councillors, Mr Hussein said: “Thank you for the invitation, but nobody would like to attend A person who support’s genocide (sic).

“Free free Palestine From the river to the sea Palestine will be free!” his email said.

Facebook posts from the councillor also called for a protest at NSW Parliament after Anthony D’Adam’s position as parliamentary secretary was revoked last week.

Premier Chris Minns’ decision to sack Mr D’Adam came after he accused the Public Order and Riot Squad of making a “liar” out of Commissioner Karen Webb, and likening officers’ behaviour to “an occupying army using force to control a civilian population” in a speech to parliament late on Wednesday night.

“Now, it’s time for us to stand up for Anthony and protest at Parliament House to show our support for him,” Mr Hussein wrote on Facebook.

He also called for supporters to send letters and emails to the Premier “urging him to reconsider his decision”.

NSW Labor declined to comment but it is understood the party office is unlikely to take any action to sanction the councillor.

Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake, also a Labor member, would not confirm whether there would be any action taken at the local level against her colleague.

“The statement in response to the invitation to the Dialogue luncheon is clearly wrong and offensive,” she said.

“Whilst we recognise a diversity of views in the community, Councillors should conduct themselves in a way which seeks to bring us together rather than engage in inflammatory comments that only divide us.

“My focus remains on delivering services to the people of Cumberland.”

Mr Hussein was also the only Labor member to vote in favour of a controversial ban on same-sex parenting books in his council’s libraries.

The ban has since been reversed.
