Red tape for property developers building new homes could be slashed, as the Minns government considers reducing building fees for projects in the Transport Orientated Development (TOD) zones.
In a speech to the Urban Development Institute of Australia luncheon on Thursday, Premier Chris Minns said he wanted to cut red tape by reducing the impediments facing developers.
The Daily Telegraph understands actions being considered by the NSW government include cutting or reducing fees for housing developers building in the TOD zones.
“We’re working closely to see what impediments are in place for buildings that are preventing them (developers) having similar output levels to Victoria,” the Premier said.
“We need to make this work and that will be looking at the cost that we put on developers as well as we need to have some pretty generous financing ideas … when it comes to developers stacking up potential projects.”
Mr Minns said more work needed to be done to get our planning systems on par with Victoria and Queensland.
“I will freely admit, on the government side of things, our planning system has not been as it should be and hasn’t been for a long time,” he said.
“We’ve got a planning system that holds back business, that adds extra costs to new projects.
“A system that, far too often, looks for excuses to delay action and investment, rather than reasons to support it.
“In NSW if a form isn’t filled in correctly, it goes to the back of the queue.”
The move to reduce fees for developers comes after the Minns government announced earlier this month it would look at acting as guarantor for certain development loans, to provide confidence to lenders funding major housing developments.
The government will also look at pre-purchasing a certain number of houses directly off housing plans.
