THEY don’t know much about wine, but millennials know they like it — and vineyards are pulling out all corks to make sure these young palates are full bottle.
New research shows millennials are twice as likely to drink wine on date night than their Gen X elders, but 60 per cent said they were confused by wine lists.
However just as many also told winemaker 19 Crimes’ survey they enjoyed learning the language of wine and how the various varieties were made.
So the company has launched augmented reality app which delivers the full story behind the wine when a user hovers their smartphone over a label. The company’s augmented reality expert Nick McArdle said it would cut through the “wine-talk”.
Micha Birkby, 23, drinks white wine up to four times a week but doesn’t mind which variety.
“If you gave me two glasses of white wine, I wouldn’t know which one is which,” she said.
Ms Birkby recently attended a wine festival but the jargon left her confused.
“I either go for a chardonnay or the cheapest or a house white,” she said. “(Young people) never really learn how to appreciate their drink.”
