WHEN you’ve fought off a shark by punching it on the nose there’s not a lot in life that can surprise you.

But shark survivor and triple world surf champion Mick Fanning says he is “stunned’’ by his Australia Day honour.

Fanning, 35, preparing to re-enter competition after almost a year on a voyage of self-discovery and healing, has been honoured for his feats both on and out of the water, named an Officer of the order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to surfing and as a supporter of charitable foundations.

“This is right up there with the world titles,’’ said Fanning, who confirmed he will return to the sport in March.

“I couldn’t believe it really. I’m chuffed and very honoured.’’

Fanning had a tumultuous 2015 — he was attacked by a shark, his marriage broke up and his brother Peter died.
