Intoxicated man falls onto Syd train tracks

A MAN came just metres from almost certain death after falling in front of a train pulling into Sydenham train station early today.

The man, understood to have been heavily intoxicated, fell from platform six in front of a Cronulla/Waterfall line train shortly before 1am.

Thanks to the quick actions of the train driver, the Tangara stopped just meters behind him about three quarters down the length of the platform.

Police rescue, paramedics and fire fighters worked to rescue the man from the tracks, putting him onto a stretcher and lifting him up to the platform.

The man, who appeared to be aged in his early 20s, was shaking and appeared to be in shock but miraculously escaped with only minor injuries.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The train driver appeared equally shaken as the entire train - near capacity as it was one of the last services for the night, was evacuated and passengers moved to another platform.
