A man has died and another man is fighting for life after a double stabbing in Sydney’s west last night.

Police say at about 12:20am they were called to Bertha St Merrylands after reports a 49-year-old man had been stabbed in the neck.

Just 20 minutes later an identical call came in for a Uren Place home where another man had been stabbed in the neck.

The 40-year-old and the first alleged victim were both rushed to Westmead Hospital, but the younger man died a short time later.

The 49-year-old is in critical condition.

Neighbours near the Uren Place crime scene said they heard screaming and yelling last night.

“I couldn’t quite see them but I could hear arguing - screaming and yelling,” Mary Massoud said.

Other neighbours said while the yelling didn’t wake them up, the noise from the Uren Pl unit blocks is frequent.

“There’s a lot of drinking but I don’t go out to see, I close the blinds and stay inside,” neighbour Thanh Tam said.

“Yesterday I didn’t hear but before I heard things ... it’s very scary. At night we don’t go outside,” she said.

One neighbour said she heard loud banging last night.

“We heard some loud doors slamming, but we are so used to it so we didn’t even get up to check,” neighbour Caroline Camilliri said.

“It’s extremely noisy”.

Police have established crime scenes at both homes which are being examined by forensic police.

A massive search for the alleged attacker was conducted with a police helicopter and the Dog Unit called in to find the man.

A 26-year-old man was later arrested in Guildford but is yet to be charged.

Police believe the three men are known to each other.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
