The mother of suicide victim Meg Thomas has been brought to tears by the overwhelming community outpouring to her daughter’s story.
Gin Thomas and her husband Wayne told The Sunday Telegraph their harrowing story of how their 13-year-old daughter was let down so badly by the NSW mental health system.
Mrs Thomas, from Leeton in the state’s south west, said she has received hundreds of messages and phone calls since Sunday morning.
“There were more than a few tears yesterday and they started by the time my husband and I got to the car after seeing Meg’s story in the paper,” she said.
“From day dot we have had a very loving, supportive and caring community.
“We have never been forgotten by the community and telling Meg’s story has reinforced that.”
Mrs Thomas said she has been contacted by people from all over the country who have been shocked and touched by the loss of Meg, who killed herself two days after Murrumbidgee Local Heath District cancelled a psychiatrist appointment because they deemed she had enough support already.
Mrs Thomas reiterated her call for more counsellors and psychiatric support for young people in the area.
“I do not know how they can’t see this, it’s right there in front of them,” she said in a message to the state government.
“It is not hard to see that the whole system is broken.
“I never knew how broken the system was until I had to walk those steps myself.”
