There has been more drama at Macquarie Street as the state’s treasurer found himself saving the life of a man just hours after being sworn in to his new role.
Matt Kean has had a busy 24 hours — rushing to the rescue of a man and performing lifesaving CPR while on his way to Parliament House.
Mr Kean was outside 60 Martin Place at about 6.30pm on Tuesday when he saw a jogger collapsed on the floor with a small crowd surrounding him.
The 43-year-old man was receiving CPR from a local pharmacist when Mr Kean, who got his first aid training from the Rural Fire Service, offered to take over before an ambulance arrived and took the man to St Vincent’s Hospital.
Mr Kean said he hoped the man was recovering and he was glad he could put his CPR training to good use.
“Anyone would have done the same. My heart goes out to his family,” he told The Daily Telegraph.
His efforts, along with those of other bystanders, were praised by NSW Ambulance Inspector Kay Armstrong.
“The bystanders who assisted this patient yesterday (Tuesday) should be commended for taking actions until paramedics arrived,” she said.
NSW Police also attended the scene and said the man was walking along Martin Place before he collapsed.
“A 43-year-old woman and two men, aged 40 and 51, gave the man CPR before NSW Ambulance paramedic and officers from Sydney City Police Area Command arrived and provided treatment.”
The man has made a good recovery in hospital.
