A MASSIVE rally has shut down Macquarie Street in the city outside State Parliament as fishers protest against proposed fishing bans.

Despite the Berejiklian Government backing down on the proposals to lock out fishermen from new marine parks off the NSW coast, the protest went ahead today.

Hundreds of fishing groups marched from Hyde Park to parliament, blocking traffic and shouting slogans against the lockouts.

Speakers said they were concerned the government’s reversal might change after next year’s election.

“Since the current Government has backflipped on so many other policies, there’s no guarantee that another backflip is not imminent,” Shooters, Fisher and Farmers MP Robert Brown said.

“We’re putting the Liberals, Nationals, Greens and Labor on notice — if you ban fishing we’ll see you at the ballot box.”
