Maroubra Beach swimmer seen ‘struggling’ in water at dusk

Police mounted a search last night after reports a swimmer was seen in trouble in waters off one of Sydney’s most popular beaches.

A swimmer has reportedly gone missing off a popular eastern suburbs beach on Tuesday night.

Bystanders are said to have seen a swimmer struggling in the waters at the northern end of Maroubra Beach about 8pm.

A witness told police they saw someone 50 metres from the shore, but no one has yet been located.

Police officers and a rescue helicopter were in the process of searching Maroubra Beach on Tuesday night.

Anyone who was at the beach or in the water swimming or surfing between 7.45pm and 8.15pm is urged to contact police immediately.
