A man has been charged after allegedly threatening people with a machete in a suburban Sydney street on Saturday morning.
Police rushed to the intersection of Norton and Marion Sts, Leichhardt, around 10.30am, before the man allegedly fled into a nearby property and barricaded himself inside.
Officers locked down the street, and a NSW Police tactical response unit was sent in alongside negotiators before the man was arrested following a stand-off with police.
Emergency services were called to the scene, with a spokesperson for NSW Police confirming that there had been “quite a big police presence”.
Police said at 12.30pm the 54-year-old man was arrested without incident and taken to Newtown Police Station.
He was charged with: being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence; attempting to stalk/intimidate; common assault; and affray.
Buses were diverted to Cromwell and Elswick St after police had shut down Marion St.
The streets have since been re-opened to the public.
Inquiries into the surrounding incident remain ongoing.
