Beachgoers have been scrambled from the water on the Northern Beaches after a shark mauled a dolphin to death.
Lifeguards have closed all beaches between Shelley Beach and Queenscliff after multiple sighting of what is believed to be a bull shark on Saturday morning.
Footage taken from near the beach shows vets and lifeguards rushing to reach the injured mammal, as shocked onlookers were forced out of the surf.
Taronga Zoo later said that the dolphin, which was taken to the zoo, had died of its injuries. An autopsy will now be carried out.
Competitors for the Manly Surf Open were just preparing to hit the waves at the time the shark was spotted.
The beaches are expected to be shut until at least Sunday morning.
“Council Lifeguards have closed all beaches between Shelly Beach and Queenscliff as a precaution due to earlier shark sighting and a shark attack on a dolphin,” a council spokesman said.
“Lifeguards will continue to monitor the situation and will only reopen the beaches when it is safe to do so.
“Council urges any beach goers at Manly to adhere to beach safety warnings and stay out of the water at this time.”
