Three men are on the run after fleeing the scene of a violent home invasion in Sydney’s west where they assaulted and hospitalised a 55-year-old man.

Just after 1.20am Tuesday police were called to a home on Boree Place in Werrington Downs following reports of a break-in.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command were told three men armed with a machete and a hammer attempted to force their way into the home before attacking a 55-year-old man with a hammer.

The group then fled the scene in a large SUV.

The injured man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported to hospital for further care.

A crime scene has been established, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
