A man has been charged after a Chinese Crested Powderpuff had its teeth knocked out in what the pooch’s owner claims was an act of animal cruelty in Sydney’s CBD.
A 40-year-old woman was walking her two dogs — Sootie the Powderpuff and Timmy — in The Rocks about 10pm on Tuesday when she sat down on a park bench.
The woman was then approached by a man walking his dog resulting in the three pooches “coming into conflict”, NSW Police Chief Inspector David Vidal told reporters on Wednesday.
“During that conflict, both parties tried to separate the dogs and at some stage one of the dogs of the female lost two front teeth,” Insp Vidal said.
A 63-year-old man was on Wednesday evening arrested on Kent Street, Millers Point following the row.
He was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with malicious damage and offensive behaviour.
The man was granted conditional bail and will front Downing Centre Local Court in early January.
NSW Police in an earlier statement said the dog - who is set to make a full recovery - had its front teeth kicked out by the man.
“Following that, the lady’s mobile phone was thrown to the ground and then stomped on by the male,” a spokesperson said.
Insp Vidal revealed the man initially walked away but returned when bystanders tried to help the woman. A “conflict” then allegedly broke out between the man and two bystanders.
It’s alleged the woman’s phone was stomped on after she took a photo of the man.
CCTV footage shows a man aggressively yelling at the woman as she holds her dogs by their collars.
