THE hunt for a lucky-to-be-alive pooch’s owner is on, after it avoided injury in a horror crash in Sydney’s south this morning.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Stoney Creek Road in Bexley just before 4am after a ute ploughed into a parked garbage truck and became wedged underneath.

The 35-year-old driver suffered serious head and leg injuries and firefighters worked for more than an hour to cut him free from the wreckage of his vehicle.

He was taken to St George Hospital and remains in a stable condition, according to a spokeswoman.

Throughout the ordeal a small dog — which had easily extracted himself from the wreck — watched patiently as emergency services helped what everyone presumed was his master.

But a fresh emergency was soon underway after it emerged the driver was just pet sitting and the dog didn’t have a name tag or microchip.

Police dropped the dog off at the nearby Sydney Dogs and Cats Home where staff, lacking any form of identification, dubbed him “Scooter”.

“He’s doing fine now, he came through uninjured although obviously a bit nervous and a bit shaken up — the whole thing was very traumatic for him,” the centre’s general manager Claire Garth said.

“But he’s had some breakfast and is now dozing in the sun.”

Ms Garth said they had now begun to reach out to local vet clinics to see if they can track down “Scooter’s” owner.

“While he had a collar on there was no name and no microchip, which has made it hard,” she said.

“We’re keen to get him back, so we’re making our own inquiries.

“We really just want to get him home.”

Police spoke with the driver earlier today but its unknown if he was able to identify Scooter’s actual owners.

If you have any further information about the crash or Scooter’s identity, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home on 9587 9611.
