Police fired a shot at a man who charged at them with a knife in Sydney’s inner west on Sunday.

Police were called to Marrickville Park in Marrickville just before 3pm after reports of a man armed with a knife lunging at families.

It’s understood the man was still lunging with the knife when police arrived. The man failed to surrender and charged at police before a shot was fired at him.

The man was arrested and taken into custody at Newtown Police Station. He was then taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for assessment.

There are no reported injuries and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Inquiries suggest the incident is mental health related.

More to come.
