Man tasered on bus

A MAN repeatedly tasered by police on a crowded Sydney bus on Thursday has had more than 250 brushes with the law.

The man, expected to be charged over the alleged assaults of other bus passengers and resisting arrest, has a lengthy criminal history relating to violence including threatening off-duty police.

He has had more than 250 interactions with NSW Police, a source told the Telegraph, and is understood to have been heavily affected by the drug ice on the bus.

The dramatic incident occurred on a 377 bus on Anzac Parade, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, about 2.30pm.

A police spokesman said the man allegedly assaulted two people on the bus, prompting officers to arrest him.

“At 2.30pm officers from Surry Hills Command were conducting a stationary RBT on Anzac Parade at Moore Park,” the spokesman said.

“A bus stopped nearby and the driver signalled for assistance.

“Police were told a man had allegedly assaulted two other bus passengers.”

Nine News, which obtained mobile phone footage of the incident, was told by a witness that the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“They were just harassing people, just yeah continually talking to them, swearing at them, and pushing them, that kind of loud unruly kind of behaviour,” the witness told Nine News.

“It doesn’t happen all the time. I catch the bus the everyday and I’ve never seen that before.”

The officers on the bus were heard repeatedly asking the man to get off the bus.

“Get off the bus, do it now, get off the bus, you’re under arrest for assault, you’re under arrest for assault,” police said.

“My name is Sgt ... from Surry Hills police station. You’re under arrest, get off the bus.”

“Get off the bus.”

The man was then repeatedly tasered, taken off the bus through the middle door and put down on grass by the side of the road.

“Get on the ground,” police said. “Do it now, get your hands behind your back. You stay where you are or you’ll get tasered again, you understand?”

A police spokesman later said the 37-year-old was tasered after allegedly assaulting a police officer.

He was arrested and taken to Surry Hills police station.

There were no reported injuries.”
