A MAN is lucky to be alive after falling more than 10m into an excavated construction site in Sydney’s CBD overnight.
Emergency services responded to the worksite next to St Johns Church on Victoria St, Darlinghurst just before 1am on Saturday after reports that a man had fallen several metres onto piles of sand, dirt and rocks.
The man, believed to be aged in his late 30s, suffered serious lower leg injuries and multiple abrasions in the fall, and was forced to wait for over an hour and a half while paramedics and police rescue officers devised a way to extricate him.
Paramedics treated the man in the northwest corner of the construction site where he appeared to have narrowly missed landing on a yellow Volvo excavator that was parked nearby.
Ten Kings Cross police officers, half a dozen paramedics and three police rescue officers were on scene to assist, with emergency vehicles lining Victoria St and Darlinghurst Rd.
The badly injured man was carried up and out of the worksite by a combined group of police officers, police rescue officers and paramedics.
He was transported to St Vincent’s Hospital, less than 300m down the road, where he remains in a stable condition.
