Man charged after alleged Lismore supermarket assaults

A man has been charged after allegedly knocking over an elderly woman and pinning another against supermarket shelves before punching a female store attendant and attacking other staff on the NSW north coast.

A man has been charged after he allegedly knocked an elderly woman to the ground and pinned another against shelving at a Lismore supermarket.

It’s understood the 63-year-old man became agitated and allegedly violent when he couldn’t find items on bare shelves at the shopping centre on Uralba St about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Police will allege in court he then pushed his trolley into the two women, believed to be aged in their 70s and punched a 45-year-old staff member in the face when she tried to intervene.

It is alleged a manager and security guard were also assaulted before they managed to remove the man from the store.

The female staff member suffered bruising and swelling to her jaw and arm, a small cut on her arm, neck stiffness and chest bruising but denied medical help.

It’s unknown if the two older women were injured as they left the store without assistance.

A man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon and later charged with affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

He was refused bail and will appear at Lismore Local Court on Thursday.
