IF you’re told to pull over, pull over. That’s the urgent festive time plea from police after a dramatic police pursuit following a random breath test ended in the tragic death of a 35-year-old man in Western Sydney.

The chase started just after 10pm on Saturday in Leonay when a man failed to stop at a random breath testing site on the Great Western Highway at Lapstone.

It is understood he was known to police for minor offences.

Police crews pursued the man through nearby streets for “a matter of minutes” before ending the pursuit.

The man continued to drive his black Mitsubishi Magna, which eventually left the road and struck a tree on the side of the M4.

The car split in two due to the impact of the crash.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones said emergency crews, as well as an off-duty nurse, helped the man at the scene before he was taken to Nepean Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

“At this point in time, the man hasn’t been identified positively,” he said.

“It’s a tragic incident. It’s a very sad event, something of course police hate at any given time and particularly in this Christmas period.”

Assistant Commissioner said it was a timely reminder for motorists to stop if told to do so by police.

“Given we’re approaching the Christmas period, we recommend that all drivers drive according to the road rules,” he said.

“If you have an indication from police to stop, please stop.

“Police will discuss matters with you and we’ll all get home safely.”

A critical incident investigation has been launched and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
