A driver has been hospitalised after his car plunged more than 20 metres down the face of a rock wall in Sydney’s inner – west.
Emergency services were called to Railway Street in Glebe just after 10am following reports a car had driven over the edge of a rock wall.
NSW Police and Fire and Rescue crews arrived at the scene to find a white Hyundai i30 hatchback crumpled next to a pile of broken trees, glass and debris from the fall.
The driver of the destroyed vehicle – a male believed to be 70 years old, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.
The extent of his injuries are unconfirmed, with police now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police officers were told the man was travelling along Darghan Street before the crash.
A witness who claims to be a good friend of the driver said he was visiting her house before going to the doctor on Monday morning.
“He’s gone over the cliff here and had an accident due to a medical episode by the looks of it,” she said.
“He’ll be okay according to the paramedics.
“It’s an absolute miracle he's alive.”
The friend of the local man said she was in “shock” after discovering her visitor had fallen that far.
“He was in and out of consciousness (when she saw him),” she said.
Railway protection officer Craig Klineberg said he heard a “tremendously loud” explosion at the time of the incident.
“That was when they (the male driver) came through the guard rail on top. Four seconds later, an even bigger crash and I got out of my car and there was a car that fell down.
“The driver was laying in the passenger seat and not moving. His face was tucked up against the side of the car.
“I was talking to the driver and called triple-0 and then the police came really quickly and rescue came to pry the door open.”
As inquiries continue, anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
