A MAN has been found guilty of shooting the aunt of Supermax inmate Bassam Hamzy.

A District Court jury took just two hours to convict the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, over the attempted murder of Maha Hamze.

The 44 year old woman was shot in the legs as she stood at the front door of her Auburn home on March 9 last year.

At the opening of his trial earlier this month Crown prosecutor Lou Lungo told the jury the man had asked Bassam Hamzy to help him collect a $20,000 debt.

The jailed Bassam Hamzy, the founder of Brothers for Life, recruited his cousin Bilal Hamze to collect the debt.

The court heard that after successfully getting the money for the man, Bilal Hamze then went to the man’s Sydney home and extorted $5,000 from his mother as a fee for collecting the debt.

“He intended to get Bilal Hamze for what he did to his mother,” Mr Lungo said.

Mrs Hamze cried in the witness stand last week, as she told the court about the eight bullet wounds she suffered to her hips and legs.

I went to open the front door ... On the way I was asking, ‘Who is it?’,” Ms Hamze said.

“I heard someone say, ‘Open the door’ ... I went to look and all of a sudden they started shooting at me.”

Judge Penelope Hock will hear sentencing submissions on December 18.

She thanked the jury and told them “it is no doubt a difficult experience [to serve.]”

The man had denied the charge of attempted murder, but pleaded guilty to possessing the glock that was used in the shooting.
