Bondi Junction fatal stabbing

A man was stabbed to death in front of shoppers on one of Sydney’s busiest streets, with police still trying to piece together the bizarre incident.

Officers have no idea what sparked the violence when Mark Thomas, 60, walked past a shirtless man standing in front of a shop on Oxford St, Bondi Junction on Saturday evening.

CCTV footage shows Mr Thomas walking past the other man, who appeared agitated, and some comment being made.

Mr Thomas puts down a bag and the two men then begin to fight, before going off camera for a minute or so.

The other man — who police say is a 30-year-old Maroubra man who is known to them — is then seen to scross the road waving a knife, saying: “I’ve been stabbed.” He is seen to lay down in front of a KFC outlet, while Mr Thomas is dead not far away on the other side of the street. He had been repeatedly stabbed in the chest and back.

The CCTV footage shows motorists and pedestrians passing the daylight confrontation, including a man and woman who try to calm the angry shirtless man down before the altercation.

Police believe it was Mr Thomas, who is homeless, who had the knife but was disarmed by the younger man — who was in a serious condition in St Vincent’s Hospital, where he remained under police guard. Police could not confirm whose knife it was, as they had yet to interview the younger man due to his injuries.

Witnesses said they heard yelling on the street before seeing a man lying in a “metre-wide” pool of blood.

Japanese restaurant owner Suka Miura said he was told the victim was a homeless man who regularly spent time in the area.

“It was just in front of our shop, the police came and put up tape,” he said.

Naked Foods employee Camila Soares, 29, whose grocery store is opposite the KFC, said she was told the two men knew each other.

“This never happens, I’ve never seen anything violent here in this neighbourhood, it’s really weird,” she said.

“Bondi Junction is safe, it’s actually very surprising — everyone is shocked. These types of stories just don’t happen.”

Another witness said: “There was an English chap (who) got down and tried to help and put pressure on the wounds, but there was a lot of blood, there was a metre-wide (pool of) blood on the ground.”
