A man drowned at a lake in western Sydney on Monday evening.

About 6.30pm emergency services arrived at Lake Parramatta near North Rocks Rd, Parramatta after reports a man had gone underwater at the popular swimming spot but failed to re-emerge.

A large search was sparked, with a Toll Rescue helicopter searching the lake from above while Marine Command police, local officers, Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters and paramedics searched the water from the ground as dusk fell.
