Two fatalities – a man and a woman – have resulted from two separate fire incidents less than seven hours apart in different units located in Sydney’s west and inner-west on Monday morning.

Just before 2:45am on Monday, emergency services rescued two men, aged 20 and 27, from a single-bedroom unit on the third-floor of a larger, blond brick complex, opposite Westfield shopping centre, that was well alight.

The 20-year-old was rescued off the unit balcony with a ladder and treated for smoke inhalation before being transported to Westmead Hospital in a stable conditions.

The 27-year-old was pulled from the unit unconscious and given CPR on a landing of the stairs before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. He died in hospital just after 5am.

The victim is believed to be an Indian national who was living in Australia where he was studying and working as an Uber delivery driver.

Five road NSW Ambulance crews and a critical care team were in attendance.

Parramatta crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Barnes said he did not believe the men were related but were flat mates.

He said the man’s family and the consulate had been contacted.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said the victim and the survivor were quiet but friendly.

“They were actually nice,’’ she said.

“We always say ‘hi’ to our neighbours. It’s really shocking for everyone.’’

In Sydney’s inner west, Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to an apartment on Denison Rd, Dulwich Hill about 9:30am to extinguish a fire.

On arrival, two firefighters managed to put out the small blaze using handheld fire extinguishers, but found the body of a deceased woman while doing so.

Police officers from Inner West Police Area Command have established a crime scene and are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Inner West PAC officer Nathan Vedder said the incident was not currently being treated as suspicious.

Fire and Rescue crews were called around 9:30 this morning after neighbours in the building noticed smoke.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry, speaking about the Parramatta fire, said 30 firefighters battled to save the man and contain the blaze.

He said cause of the fire was still being determined and the possible absence of smoke alarms was being investigated.

He also added that the double-concrete building meant the fire did not spread beyond the apartment.

“Although they don’t go for long (these fires), they’re very intense,’’ Mr Dewberry said.

“The firefighters are working at 100 per cent capacity.’’

Later on Monday morning, Fire and Rescue NSW crews were door knocking on the units and other nearby homes to ensure residents had working smoke alarms.

An accelerant detector dog was also at the site with investigators who swarmed the unit block.

Resident Susan Chhetri was evacuated from his unit on the third floor unit where he has lived for a year.

“It was a bit scary because when we came out here there was smoke on the third floor but the bottom floor was all right,’’ he said.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Later at 9:30am, firefighters tackled another vicious blaze at a unit in Dulwich Hill, which was on the second storey of a three-storey unit complex.

Upon entry of the home, fire crews found a woman suffering burns to their body, and extricated them to provide urgent medical attention before paramedics arrived.

Unfortunately, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The cause of the fire is also being investigated by FRNSW and NSW Police.
