WEDGED under a semi-trailer after a horror smash, this Toyota LandCruiser appeared a certain death trap for anyone in the front seat.
But while the male driver was killed instantly, police are amazed a woman passenger sitting beside him walked away with a minor head wound. Sitting in a gutter, the 46-year-old was consoled by emergency workers after the 4WD veered onto the wrong side of the road and slammed head-on into the truck in Wetherill Park just after 6pm on Wednesday.

The male driver, 37, bore the brunt of the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inspector Adam Bird of Fairfield Police Area Command said it was a fluke the woman had survived.
“Look, it’s very lucky, very lucky indeed. Considering the damage to the car and the unfortunate death of the driver,” he said. “This is a tragic incident. And we would just like to remind drivers to remain vigilant, be mindful and obey the road rules.”
Inspector Bird said police were still trying to piece together what caused the 4WD to drift across the centre lines in the moments before crashing into the truck in Newton Road.
“We’ve got witnesses who observed the car veering onto the wrong side of the road,” he said.
There was nobody in the truck at the time of the crash and it was legally parked.
“It’s fairly common along that section of the road in that industrial area to have semi-trailers parked on the side of the road legally,” he said.
This year’s road toll is 232, compared to 241 at the same time last year.
