A man who allegedly urinated on the Anzac Memorial early Sunday morning has been labelled “miserable, uneducated, and ungrateful” by Veterans Minister David Elliott.

Mr Elliott said urinating on a War Memorial “is up there with stealing from an orphan or spitting on your mother when it comes to bastard acts”.

“Commemorating the sacrifice of 100,000 Australian war dead is a sacred place,” Mr Elliott said.

“My thanks to the security detail and NSW Police for apprehending this bloke. I know for a fact they take this stuff personally and seriously.”

Police will allege that just after midnight the man, who was walking though Hyde Park in Sydney’s CBD, approached the southeastern side of the Anzac Memorial and began to urinate on the building.

Security officers detained the man and officers from Sydney City Police Area Command attended and arrested the 25-year-old.

He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with commit offensive act in, on war memorial/interment site.

The Randwick man was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on February 24.
