A man has been charged after a house fire in Sydney’s west left an elderly man fighting for life in hospital.
More than 20 firefighters with six fire trucks were called to Orth St in Kingswood shortly before 7am on Tuesday following reports of a house fire.
Crews arrived to find a single-level house well alight.
“Firefighters attacked the fire with several lines of hose and searched the property,” a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said.
“One person was located and removed from the home.”
A 71-year-old man was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Nepean Hospital in a critical condition.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and no other people were found inside the home.
Police established a crime scene and started investigating the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
Following inquiries, a 63-year-old man was arrested nearby just after 3pm and taken to Nepean Hospital for medical treatment.
After being discharged from hospital, the man was taken to Penrith police station where he was charged with three offences – damage property by fire with intent to injure, damage property by fire and reckless grievous bodily harm.
The man was refused bail and will appear at Penrith Local Court on Wednesday.
