Police have charged a man with murder over the death of a three-year-old boy whose body was found with stab wounds in a home in Sydney’s southwest on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old man was charged late on Friday.

He is currently in hospital and due to face a bedside court hearing on Saturday morning.

Police will allege the man used a kitchen knife to fatally stab the little boy, whose body was found inside a Riverwood unit.

When officers arrived at the Washington Avenue address around 4pm the man was still in the unit, suffering knife injuries which police believe he inflicted upon himself.

He was taken to St George Hospital where he underwent surgery on Thursday morning and remained in a stable condition under police guard.

It’s understood the boy’s mother died from an illness when he was only months old and the child had been raised by his father.

The boy’s mother’s family were still coming to grips with her untimely death when they were struck with the tragedy.

In a tribute posted six months after she died in 2001, her mother said she was having a hard time when she remembered the “last time I saw you alive when you arrived in the middle of the night by taxi and were very distraught”.

She spoke of the next day watching her daughter “walk up the street to the bus stop” and said she knew in her heart “that would be the last time I would ever see you alive”.
