Man charged after NSW Liberal branch brawl at Arncliffe

POLICE have charged a 27-year-old man over a brawl which broke out in a Liberal Party branch meeting.
The meeting was being held at the back of Naji’s Cafe - owned by Bayside Council Liberal councillor Michael Nagi - on June 18 when violence broke out just before 7pm.
A 37-year-old man sustained a number of facial injuries and had to be taken to St George Hospital for treatment.
Many of the attendees ran off as soon as St George Police arrived, however one man was stopped.
“A man was momentarily restrained before allegedly pushing an officer and running off,” a police statement said.
Detectives searched a house on Wollongong Rd, Arncliffe at about 12pm yesterday.
Two hours later the 27-year-old man arrived at St George Police Station where he was arrested.
He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of other(s), assault officer in execution of duty, and resist officer in execution of duty and is due to face court on August 7.
There is no suggestion Mr Nagi was involved in any inappropriate conduct.
The fight is understood to have broken out after a group tried to enter the meeting of three branches of the Bayside section of the Liberal Party, which was taking place at the cafe.
