A man living in a notorious inner west housing commission has been arrested after allegedly holding his partner and a man at knifepoint in two separate incidents before allegedly assaulting a female police officer.
Police were called the 11-story housing commission block on Pyrmont Bridge Rd, Camperdown after concerns for a woman’s welfare at 10.30pm on Saturday
In a separate incident last month a 25-year-old man was stabbed to death on the front steps of the rat infested, decrepit building.
On their arrival, police spoke to a 50-year-old man and his 49-year-old female partner.
The man evaded police while the woman was treated by paramedics for facial injuries before she was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital.
Officers from Leichhardt Police Area Command quickly started searching for him.
After looking for around 50 minutes, they stopped a Hyundai Getz on Layton St, Camperdown and attempted to arrest the 50-year-old man who was sitting in the passenger seat.
He tried to fight off police, allegedly shoving a female officer, before allegedly attempting to grab a knife from inside the vehicle.
The officer was bruised and scratched but did not need medical treatment.
After a brief scuffle the man was restrained by officers who were helped by a nearby pub’s security guard and a member of the public.
The 50-year-old was arrested, with police finding three kitchen knives, before being taken to hospital for treatment.
Officers spoke with the 27-year-old driver of the Getz who claimed he had been forced to drive around the older man at knifepoint.
The 50-year-old was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with multiple offences including assaulting an officer and domestic violence offences.
He was refused bail to appear at Newtown Local Court tomorrow.
