IN the first weekend after the launch of the Ask for Angela safety campaign, a woman has been allegedly bitten and indecently assaulted at Kinselas in Darlinghurst — a hotspot area for the initiative.

Police allege 22-year-old Jay Yoshia, of Bondi Junction, approached a 22-year-old woman at the popular night spot and attempted to speak to her about 2am today.

It is alleged Yoshia then bit the young woman on her cheek and indecently assaulted her.

The woman told security staff about the incident and they contacted Surry Hills Police.

Yoshia was arrested at Kinselas and taken to Surry Hills Police Station, where he was charged with assault with an act of indecency, common assault and breaching his bail conditions.

He was taken to Parramatta Bail Court today, where he was granted conditional bail to reappear before Central Local Court on Friday.

Last Tuesday, Police Minister Troy Grant announced Ask for Angela, a new program where bar staff are trained to follow a new protocol and help any women who feels unsafe within their premises.

Staff will then help the person to leave the bar discreetly, lead them to a safe space inside the venue or contact police on their behalf.

Last week, Central Metropolitan Region Police Commander Mark Walton told The Daily Telegraph the program was a step in the right direction in helping women feel safe while out in the city.

“We are determined to prevent sexual assaults and if this campaign allows us to remove people from harm’s way, then it’s well worth it,” Mr Walton said.

The Ask For Angela protocol is the outcome of research conducted by Central Metropolitan Region NSW Police analysts into sexual assault, looking at incidents in the CBD, Newtown, Kings Cross and Darlinghurst areas.
