A male motorcycle rider has died after a police chase in Sydney’s inner west this afternoon.

About 2:30pm on Monday, highway patrol officers tried to pull over a motorbike travelling along Arthur St, Strathfield, but the bike failed to stop.

Police gave chase, before the motorbike clipped a nearby Toyota Corolla while trying to overtake the car, lost control and crashed into a power pole in front of a childcare centre.

The male rider, who police believe is a 29 year-old man, was treated at the scene by officers and paramedics but couldn’t be saved.

He is yet to be formally identified.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Andrew said on Monday that officers had first spotted the man travelling on the nearby M4 motorway before the pursuit.

“The rider was identified on the M4 travelling west....police didn’t initiate pursuit until he turned into Arthur Street,” Asst Comm Holland said.

Investigators are now probing whether the rider was speeding before he crashed into the Toyota and the telegraph pole, Asst Com Holland said.

Police closed Arthur St in both directions between Henley St and Hornesy Rd, and a crime scene has been established.

The motorbike and the rider’s helmet were seen a short distance away.

Anyone with information or dashcam vision has been urged to contact police.
