Maintenance work underway at 230 schools across the state

Hundreds of NSW public schools will get a lick of paint over the holidays in a massive maintenance blitz starting tomorrow.

Work crews will be busy at 230 schools across the state while students put their feet up during the spring holidays.

Workers will install new roofs, floors, fences, shadecloths, sewerage systems and carpets.

Handymen will also repair windows and toilets, clean out gutters and downpipes, paint classrooms and resurface sports courts.

The 13 schools where roofs will be replaced this holidays include Barellan Central School, Bellata Public School and Greenwell Point Public School.

The state government has committed $449 million in this year’s Budget to clear the maintenance backlog by June 2020, taking the total maintenance spend to $1.3 billion over five years.

“We are taking advantage of the holidays to invest over $35 million in various repairs from roofing, painting, plumbing and landscaping,” Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said.

“The NSW Government is delivering on our election commitment to wipe the school maintenance backlog by July next year.

“We will have completed approximately one third of the maintenance backlog following these school holidays, weather permitting.

“We are committed to ensuring we provide the best facilities for the students and staff at NSW public schools, and that includes attending to repairs and maintenance work to ensure existing schools remain in top condition.”

While schools are being spruced up, a further 190 schools across the state are being built or renovated.

The government has boasted of the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the state’s history.
