A man staged an eight-hour stand-off with police, hiding in a roof cavity to avoid officers who were responding to reports of a domestic incident in which a woman had her mouth stuffed shut with a sock.
Police established a perimeter around the Macquarie Fields home as Danny Yousif hid in the roof cavity, ripping off tiles while negotiators tried to coax him down.
Witnesses said the 31-year-old popped his head up intermittently to see the movement of police.
Officers rushed to the house after reports of a verbal argument between Yousif and his girlfriend.
Initial reports to police indicated a woman at the house had a sock in her mouth and then her mouth was taped shut.
“It looked like he was quite cramped and uncomfortable, then he would pop his head out when he heard a noise or wanted to see what was happening below,” one witness said.
“At one point when noticed there were media he covered his head so you couldn’t see him.”
Yousif kept police at bay for most of Friday until he was finally arrested when he came down from the Catkin Way roof at 8pm.
Yousif was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for observation. On release, he was taken into custody.
He had been out on parole for break and enter and fraud charges.
His parole has now been revoked and he is back in prison. He has not been charged with any domestic violence offences.
The incident was one of 400 or so that police attend every day in relation to reports of domestic violence.
The Saturday Telegraph revealed officers attend more than 140,000 domestic-related incidents every year.
