M1 delays Central Coast: truck ablaze, workers injured near Kangy Angy

A roadside worker was treated for shock after she narrowly missed being injured during a huge truck collision on the M1 early on Tuesday morning.

A truckie has escaped a burning semi-trailer after it smashed into two work vehicles injuring three other people and causing chaos on the M1.

Traffic was tailed back more than eight kilometres on the motorway with other major roads affected by the overflow.

The truck driver, aged 62, managed to clamber out of the B-double truck just moments before it caught alight and was uninjured.

The driver of a slow moving Hilo truck, a 43-year-old man, copped the most damage seriously injuring his legs and hips when the B-double smashed into the vehicle.

His vehicle then flipped and hit another truck which a 58-year-old man had just exited. He suffered minor injuries.

The crash was witnessed by a female road worker who saw the truck barrelling towards the Hilo and ran away from the collision. She was treated at Wyong Hospital for shock.

Emergency services were first called to the southbound lanes of the motorway at Kangy Angy on the Central Coast around 3.45am on Tuesday after reports of a crash.

Paramedics treated three men and one woman on the side of the road before taking them to three separate hospitals.

The driver of the truck was also assessed and taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Police said the semi-trailer had driven through a work zone before smashing into the vehicles injuring the workers.

A Transport Management Centre spokesman said there were diversions in place.

“The southbound carriageway remains closed near the Alison Road overpass as investigations continue,” he said.

“Traffic is heavy in both directions on the motorway, as well as on Hue Hue Road, Sparks Road, and the Pacific Highway through Wyong.”

“Motorists should consider delaying their trip, or allow plenty of extra travel time and follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews.”

Meanwhile, there were heavy delays in Sydney after an oversized truck became stuck in the M5 tunnel at 3.45am.

The vehicle was travelling eastbound when it struck the roof of the tunnel.
