Mr Elliott said he was defending himself because Mr Foley called him a “grub”.

“I note that the opposition leader called me a grub. I’ll tell you what I’m not,” Mr Elliott began.

“I’m not a double drink driver. I’ve never taken a quarter of a million dollars from a convicted murderer and refused to give it back. I haven’t had a little bit too much to drink at a party and harassed an ABC journalist. I’ve never done that.

“I didn’t knife a woman in the back to get my political seat. I didn’t do that.”

He then circled back to the accusation Mr Foley had harassed a journalist.

“I hope there’s no ABC or Herald journo turning up to those drinks because we know what you’re like when you’ve had a few. Just quietly,” Mr Elliott said.

A spokesman for Mr Foley said: “Mr Elliott made allegations under Parliamentary privilege that were he to repeat outside the Parliament Mr Foley will be forced to take the appropriate action.

“However Mr Foley said he is more than happy to repeat the fact that Mr Elliott is a grub, in or outside the chamber.

“The allegation is untrue,” the spokesman for Mr Foley said.
