CRICKET: Western Districts were at their explosive best on the opening day of the two-day competition last weekend, and they’ll be looking to finish the job today.

Southern Districts will have to pull out all stops to avoid an outright defeat to Wests at Captain Cook Reserve.

After being rolled for 68 in their first innings, Souths were unable to contain the dominant Wests batting line-up, as they opened up a 229-run lead with six wickets still in hand.

Brian May has a golden opportunity to add another century to his name, as he returns to the crease at 90.

Harding-Madsen Shield winners Metropolitan-Easts find themselves in a commanding position against University heading into today’s second day.

University trails by 274 runs currently with two wickets lost, after both openers were removed prior to the close of day one.

Northern Brothers Diggers are looking to move up into third position on the ladder and leapfrog opponents Highfields-Railways in the process.

Diggers posted a modest total of 157 on the opening day of play last weekend, however their bowlers put them in the box seat to take first innings points, restricting the Bulldogs to 7/42.
