Wells picks up seven of the best

IF HENRY Wells had his way, he wouldn’t have bowled. Luckily his captain had other ideas.

CRICKET: Henry Wells completed the rare feat of taking seven wickets in an innings at the weekend.

But if he had it his way, he wouldn’t have got a chance to throw them down.

The boarder from Mackay had an afternoon to remember for the Toowoomba Grammar Second XI against The Southport School, finishing with figures of 7/16 from six overs.

Wells has been a batsman for the majority of his career, and has barely bowled a ball this year.

The persistence of his captain paid off however, in a move that proved a masterstroke.

“I haven’t really rolled the arm over in 12 months. I’ve bowled two overs in the past two games,” Wells said.

“I was captain for the past two years and never gave myself the ball. I actually said no when I was asked to bowl.

“The captain told me I was bowling. I didn’t take a wicket in my first over and I asked him to take me off.

“He stuck with me. I took two wickets in the next over and then went wicket, wicket, dot, wicket in the third.”
