RUGBY LEAGUE: As the Western Mustangs prepares to embark on a defining statewide campaign, some of the region’s brightest talents will get their chance to shine.

With the start of the U16s Cyril Connell Challenge and U18s Mal Meninga Cup this weekend, The Chronicle looks at five Mustangs to keep an eye on throughout the season.

JOSEPH CURRIE (MAL MENINGA CUP)

A student at Toowoomba Grammar School, Currie has made a strong impression in both league and union throughout his teenage years.

Currie has represented Queensland in multiple age groups and gives the Mustangs serious firepower in the centres.

TYSON STEVENS (MAL MENINGA CUP)

A back-rower with a hunger for doing the hard yards for his team, Stevens will take benefit from years of playing against top echelon players.

He was one of the standouts for St Mary’s throughout the Langer Cup last year, and looks suited to this high level of football.

RILEY WOCKNER (MAL MENINGA CUP)

Will take up the fullback role for the Mustangs which will certainly give the side an edge at the back.

The Brothers junior possesses representative experience at the state level, and is coming off a solid campaign in the Langer Cup.

Wockner knows when to chime in and can direct the defence.

LYHKAN KING-TOGIA (CYRIL CONNELL CHALLENGE)

King-Togia is shaping as a key cog in the halves for the Mustangs U16s, with the Dalby junior set to ask a lot of questions of opposition defences.

Another that has previously worn the maroon of Queensland at the state level, King-Togia shapes as a natural leader.

LUKE CESARI (CYRIL CONNELL CHALLENGE)

Cesari gives the Mustangs a strong option at the end of the backline, and he knows how to find the line.

Cesari has been a fixture in Mustangs teams throughout recent times, and those combinations, as well as his speed, will prove a real asset for the team in 2021.
