HARNESS RACING: After three years on the sidelines, the trots are set to make a return to Allman Park.
The Darling Downs Harness Racing Club has worked in partnership with the Warwick Turf Club and Racing Queesland to secure the meeting next month, which will include the running of the Warwick Pacing Cup.
In a huge coup for the race day, all races will be broadcast on Sky Racing with wagering offered by the TAB.
DDHRC president Ben Hall said a lot of hard work has gone into securing the December 6 race day.
“We’ve been working with Racing Queensland to get the date and they’ve been great,” Hall said.
“They’re magnificent supporters of grass racing and getting it out to its heartland. A slot has been secured on Sky Racing.
“The Warwick Turf Club loves having the trots there because it gives them another race day, and it’s a pre-Christmas meeting so Christmas parties are encouraged.”
With the majority of harness racing conducted on the synthetic surfaces of Albion Park, Redcliffe and Marburg, grass racing offers a unique change from the norm.
“The meeting runs with the grass harness racing series over the summer in line with a few meetings from Kilcoy,” Hall said.
“Warwick will be the first stand-alone meeting of the season with a dual-code event at Kilcoy the week before.
“It’s a good chance to get the product out there and offer something different.
“It’s a good step to bring harness racing back to the people, and it’s always a popular meeting.”
The sport has been gathering momentum in recent times on the Downs, with events held at the Toowoomba and Warwick Shows last year, before both were forced cancellations this year.
Back in 2017, Warwick’s meeting featured the likes of Our Major Day, Clintal Do and My Ultimate Fella and was well supported by leading Brisbane trainers and drivers.
